Chapter Thirteen

“Oh. My. God.”

I was shellshocked. Alex had to lead me like a little dog, down the stairs of Giordando’s offices, and out into the courtyard, as I repeated all his words in my head, trying to make sense of them. After running over the whole, brief meeting in my head a few times, I had two core facts solidified.

Number one: I might not be the Black Chalice.

And number two, Cardinal Giordando was a giant dick.

Nate and Mags followed behind us. As soon as we were outside, they began arguing passionately in Italian.

Alex, mindful of my mood, held me closer to his body and growled at them. “English. Please.”

Nate came up beside me. “I’m so sorry about that, Eve. I was just scolding my sister for exposing you to such an unpleasant meeting.”

“I had no idea Giordando would be so reluctant to help,” she said sorrowfully. “By all accounts, he is a dynamic, forceful man, but not a cruel one. Something must have happened. He seemed… overwhelmingly stressed.”

“He’s a giant dick,” I muttered, still in shock.

Alex squeezed my hand. “He’s a hypocrite, just like all the rest of them,” he said, waving his hand around the majestic buildings that we passed.

“But it’s good news,” Mags protested. “Eve might not be the Chalice.”

Nate frowned. “I think we’re all pretty sure that she is.”

“Are we? Alex, what do you think?”

For the first time, he looked uncertain. “I was sure. But now, I don’t dare to hope that it’s not her.”

Mags dismissed him with a wave. “Your feelings are compromised. Both of you are ruled by your hormones.” She frowned, a little crinkle appearing in between her eyebrows. The tiny flaw only made her face look more perfect. “We need a new plan,” she muttered.

“The plan remains the same. Stop Godric,” Alex growled. “And protect Eve.”

All of us lapsed into silence. I could almost feel their brains whizzing around in circles beside me.

We reached the gates of the Vatican and moved through security in silence. Giordando was right. Now that I was paying attention, I saw guards with machine guns around every corner. But Giordando was wrong about Alex. He could move faster than I could see. If he wanted to, he could take out all the guards in a fraction of a second.

We regrouped on the footpath outside the Vatican gates.

“I need to get more information,” Mags said. “I have to find out about this other girl.”

“How will you be able to tell if she’s the Chalice or not?” Nate asked. “Giordando has thrown us all for a loop. As Alex said, I was certain that it was Eve too. But now…” Nate’s eyes raked over me for a minute, his gaze hot. “... I just don’t know.” He glanced at Alex apologetically. “I feel her pull,” he murmured, gesturing at me. “But, I don’t know if it’s magical, or…” He trailed off.

“Or you just being your normal horny self,” Mags sang, inspecting her nails.

Her little display of sisterly bitchiness made me smile.
